Week 12- Final Performance Evaluation

At the beginning of the term, I set my self some objectives that I wanted to have accomplished by the end of the task. My first objective was to find a creative process that I could work with in order to the choreograph my piece. I found that I was able to find one to choreograph but at the beginning I did struggle to settle into this process, to overcome this I tried to experiment with different ways of choreographing such as improvisation and also through words. However, I found all of these quite difficult, so in the end I wrote movements down and then performed them an I found this a lot more natural to create movement. This process was me listening to the music and then writing down the movements that I pictured in my head rather than dancing them straight away. After this I really tried to set the timing and then danced it afterwards.  Another objective was to be able to research my stimulus enough so that I could develop movements that I felt were reflective of my narrativ...

Week 11- Dance Piece 3

Image
The piece which I will be critiquing today is Wayne McGreogor's Genus. This was first perfromed in 2007 be the Paris Opera Ballet and has a duration of 45 minutes.  (Studio Wayne McGregor, n.d.) This piece is based on Charles Darwin's On the origin Of  Species. I t’s the magisterial tome whose 1859 publication blew apart prevailing theories about the divine advent of humankind and emitted shock waves that penetrated almost every corner of intellectual inquiry. (Crabb, 2017)  When the company first danced a McGregor piece in November 2010 audiences responded with deafening approval. It created a buzz that sounded far beyond the regular ballet crowd and lured a notably younger audience into that sanctuary of mostly high art, the Four Seasons Centre. (Crabb, 2017) Firstly the costuming and staging is very fitting for the narrative of the piece. The costume is a unitard which is black with grey in the centre. This is very similar to a gorilla's appearance,...

Week 10- Studio Performance

Now that my choreography is complete, I reviewed the original learning outcomes. One of these was to demonstrate the application of theories, processes, devices and technical dance skills to choreograph, create  and design original dance to pre-selected stimuli. I believe I have, to the best of my ability, incorporated Wayne McGregor's creative process whilst choreographing. There are many moments within the dance where I spell out a word using my body, these include the words fish and also pressure. I also viewed the letters of the these words as 3D objects that I had to try and move around.  In addition to this, I have included variety of choreographic devices within my piece. These include, augmentation, repetition, embellishment and retrograde. Each of these devices have been chosen as they all link to my stimuli - climate change and pollution. Augmentation is used towards the end of my choreography. I chose to incorporate this device within this specific stage of the pie...

Week 9 – Critical Review of Dance Piece #2

The choreography that I will be critiquing is McGregor's Woolf Works. This piece is bases on Virginia Woolf who defied the false order of narrative conventions to depict a heightened, startling and poignant reality. re-creates the synesthetic collision of form and substance in her writings. (Studio Wayne McGregor, n.d.) Originally performed by the Royal Ballet company, the piece aims to represent  Woolf's world of 'granite and rainbow' where human beings are at once both physical body and uncontained essence. (Studio Wayne McGregor, n.d.).  Firstly, whilst watching the piece I was drawn to the costuming and staging. The costumes in which the dancers are wearing are very bare showing every part of the human body, which links back to McGregor's other piece infra where again they were wearing revealing costumes. By showing every part of the body it makes you realise how everything in the body has a purpose and that it's all very mechanical, this can also be ...

Week 9 – Creative Development – Session 3

Week 8 – Creative Development – Session 2

I have now completed my choreography, I have faced a few challenges whilst creating my piece such as finding it difficult to get inspired and create movements. During the first creative session I found it difficult to use movements that mirror the fluidity of marine organisms, however after reflecting on my creative process I realised that I needed to write ideas down and view videos of marine life online, and use their actions as literal parts of my piece. Due to the fact that the beginning of my piece is linked to marine life I researched the activity of deep sea organisms by watching documentaries  (Earth, 2018) and trying emulate that in my movements. I also was inspired by my practitioners creative process as I used the word "fish" to create a motif. Wayne McGregor uses the letters of words to inspire him, for example the letter F could be 3D in front of him and he has to get around it or he spells it put literally with his body. I used this same technique as a means o...
