Week 3 – Key Practitioner Lesson One – ‘In Countenance of Kings’ by Justin Peck

Countenance of Kings is choreographed by Justin Peck from San Fransisco Ballet. Initially I felt a sense of confusion, freedom and disorientation. The feeling of freedom developed from the woman at the beginning taking her hair down and also the transition of setting from a more confined space to a large hall. This feeling was then enhanced by many more dancers joining her as soon as she's in the hall. However, the use of patterns and movement of the large cast created the piece to be quite disorientating and confusing, especially with the different camera angles as you didn't know where you were in the hall or what you should be focusing on. After focusing on the movement of the dancers, I realised that there was quite a contrast between the classical moves but the foot wear of the dancers and the transitions of the movements also. All the movements in the piece were classical, however when ever the dancers went to change position they'd run to their destination. This a...

Week 2 – Choreographic Devices

In this lesson we looked at choreographic techniques to develop our movements. Louisa and I really focussed on unison, embellishment, contrast and inversion. Inversion is demonstrated during the port de bras back as we a mirroring one another. Then we used embellishment during the rolls in the floor by adding a leg. By doing this, it makes it more exciting for the audience. Whilst extending the leg during the roll we tried to suspend it going down to create a contrast and more of a dynamic. The solo was based upon my star sign which is Capricorn. Each movement symbolises a word that is a trait of a Capricorn. To begin with I took my arms to fifth from kneeling to create a contrast in levels. This port de bras represents happiness as it creates a circular shape to mimic the sun which has connotations of joy. Then I rolled on the ground representing intelligence, this is because it starts up small and screwed up into a more open position. This symbolises problems that appear very...

Week 1 – Introduction to Choreography

In this lesson we created movement by using our mobile phone number and our our names. The first video attached are  the movements I created that were inspired by my name. This task made me realise how much such a small thing such as writing your name in the air can develop into larger movements. However, due to the fact that this was the first choreographic task I found it hard for the moves to flow and how to travel through the space.. I think some strengths in this piece were that I managed to change direction and use different levels. However, to improve the choreography I would make it travel more and incorporate more dynamics. I chose the word release to show the resistance as I came down from a move, nonetheless, I still think I could’ve made this even more obvious through my movement.  The second video of choreography was created by using different movements for each number. For example a 0 was a shunt and 6 was a swing. I found this task allowed me to b...
