Week 3 – Key Practitioner Lesson One – 'Shape' Creative Task

After watching Justin Peck’s creative process we then attempted to choreograph using the same method. He initially starts by drawing shapes and listening to the music over and over again to create patterns. To recreate this we each drew a shape on to a piece of paper to use as a map for our movement. I started with the shape in the lower left hand corner and decided for this I would draw it in the air with my legs and arms to really get the sense of circular movement but with the rolling of the wrists too. Then I moved on to the squiggle where my foot drew it on the floor. For the rhombus I imagined it was 3D and stepped over it. After this I remained still to represent the dot and then did a pirouette to symbolise the swirl. For the last few movements I just used my arms and legs to create the lines drawn on the “map”.

  1. I liked how with the different shapes you created these with different body parts for example when portraying the circle, you used circular motions in your wrists, what lead you to choose to portray the shapes within your piece?

    1. Thank you for your comment Megan, I felt that because the drawing showed one main circle and two coming off that, I needed to show this in my body. Therefore I decided to make my leg mirror the main circle and use my wrists as the little ones.

  2. I can clearly see some of the shapes that you have chosen in your choreography, and it is interesting to see your interpretation from the map we made. If you were to incorporate a jump into your phrase, how would you create a shape with it?

    1. Thank you for your comment Eloisa. If I was to incorporate a jump I feel like I would use the loop as inspiration. The jump that I would use is a grand jete entournant as the legs would show the loop in the air.

  3. It was very interesting to see how unique your interpretation of the shapes were.
To show levels in your choreography, could you give some examples of how you would use floor work to demonstrate some shapes?

    1. Thank you for your comment Caitlyn. I would use my body as a whole to create the shape on the floor, for example the zigzag would be portrayed by me being in contraction but have my arms in the opposite direction. I would also include more rolls and travel as a lot of the drawings are long with the addition of a loop.

  4. Just a few points to think about - Was the task successful? Why? How did it make you feel?

    1. Thank you for your comment Miss Norman. I felt like this task was the most successful in helping me develop my own creative process as I found it much easier to work from a visual aid. It made me feel that now I found a way in which I can choreograph that my final piece will not be so overwhelming.
