Week 6 – Final Idea

The stimulus I have chosen is pollution which is depicted below:

I am drawn to this picture as it relates to many of the major issues in our society today. In this photo it shows an industrial area which is most likely powered by fossil fuels. The consequences of using fossil fuels are potentially fatal and therefore I’ve chosen to base my choreography on the “journey” of a fossil fuel.

How I will do this is by using initially small movements to represent the prehistoric marine creatures that form the oil. Trees also formed the oil so I will contrast this fluid dynamic with straight lines and sharp movements. Then as the pressure increases the movement will get lower and lower with resistance. Once I reach the floor I will then begin to move on to the heating of the oil by moving faster and faster. I will then symbolise smoke by starting off with small movements in to large movements to give a sense of the movements diapering as smoke does. To then show global warming through movement I will use geometric shapes to represent the straight lines of radiation. After this, I will show the effects of global warming on humans and the world.

Some techniques I’d like to include are augmentation and fragmentation to help convey this important message to the audience. I want the audience to take away a sense of panic and urgency from the piece as I want to convey how we as a world are running out of time. To do this I will try and speed up the movements towards the end of the piece when I am symbolising the effects which will end in extinction.

  1. Your idea is very unique and you have thought very carefully about how you will use your idea to develop your movements. What kind of music would you like to use and how do you think this will relate to your idea? You have planned the structure of your piece well.

    1. Thank you for your comment Daisy, I have found music that I would like to choreograph to and it’s called The untold. It starts off quite serene but then changes to an intense mood which will show the difference between the serene marine organisms and the panic of the consequences.

  2. I love your idea as it's very different and you have explored the stimulus in great detail. The fact you have including information about the sort of techniques you'd like to convey in your piece shows how much thought you have put into your idea.
What music are you thinking of choosing for your piece?

    1. Thank you for your comment Abi, I have chosen a piece if music called The Untold. The music gradually builds and then dies down again which I was looking for to fit with my choreography.

  3. I like how you have already thought of movement ideas based on your research and own knowledge. You mention how you may use fragmentation in your piece, is there any other choreographic devices that you may include whilst choreographing your piece? And how would that device link to your stimuli?

    1. Thank you for your comment Hannah, another device I am hoping to use is augmentation. This will link with my stimulus as my piece is about the causes and consequences of fossil fuels, therefore by having steps that are due to another movement links.

  4. Fantastic explanation of your final idea and the structure you want to follow within your solo, this will hopefully benefit you as the weeks progress. Your concept is clear unique and I like your idea of showing the effects of global warming on humans and the world. How will you demonstrate this idea through movement within your piece? How will your research affect your movement development and how will the use of choreographic devices help portray your idea? Have you considered music for your piece?
Please give a title to your post and revisit your images, as they appear to not load.

    1. Thank you for your comment Miss Norman. My movement in my final stage of the choreography will be portraying the effects on humans, for example one consequence is disease. Movements that I'm planning to include to portray disease is contractions whilst hunched over to symbolise coughing. Moreover, the final part of my consequence stage is extinction, and therefore I will portray the population becoming overwhelmed with consequences which will then eventually lead to death.
Additionally my research will be mostly be science based as I will research the movement of particles within a gas and also pressure. Therefore, my moment will be based upon the movement of the particles and also the dynamics of my piece will also be inspired by my research that I will undertake. The choreographic devices that will be in my piece will also link to my stimulus. For example I want to include augmentation to show that everything has a consequence; each movement has a consequential movement.
Finally the music I have chosen for my piece is called The Untold. I chose this music due to the fact that the music slowly builds and then returns to the sereneness of the beginning of the track at the end. This will allow me to build up my movements and dynamics to a point of chaos and then end it with extinction.
