Week 4 – Key Practitioner Lesson Two

The three creative tasks we have completed have been different but also helpful in understanding how  I can develop my own creative process. The first creative task was the zodiac task, in this task we were given adjectives that described our star sign. During this task I found it difficult personify each adjective and then to think linking steps, especially with contrasting emotions. Subsequently I came to the conclusion that I find it difficult to choreograph from emotions or adjectives.

The next task was inspired by Justin Peck’s creative process. Firstly, he listens to the music and then draws patterns on paper. To resemble this a piece of paper was passed around the class and shapes were drawn by each individual. We were then told to use this as a map to choreograph a motif. This task I found easier than the previous as I could visual and use the shapes in various different ways. An example of this was that there was a trapezium drawn and I used it as a 3D shape and stepped shape.

The final task we had to complete was inspired by Wayne McGregor. He uses scientific inspiration for his choreography, such as evolution. We were shown a video of raindrops on a window and then told to improvise but move how we think the rain would. I found this a more accessible task as I could watch the movement and copy the rain. These movements could then be developed into to a smother sequence.

  1. You have gone into detail about all of the creative tasks. I like the way you have identified which tasks you found easy and difficult. What sort of movements did you do to show raindrops?

    1. Thank you for your comment Rachel. I used my hands a lot to portray the rain drops and also a lot of isolation which then led into a more fluid movement throughout my whole body.

  2. I like how you structured you blog clearly and how you explained each creative task in great detail. However, how did you overcome any challenges you faced? Was it easy to overcome them?

    1. Thank you for your comment Lucy. I faced a great challenge trying to complete the zodiac task. This challenge was to portray the characteristic through movement. However, to overcome this I used connotations of the characteristics and then performed the first movement that come into my mind whilst thinking this.

  3. Looking back, have these processes allowed you to form your own ideas for your own creative processes to create movement? If so, what are your new ideas?
Reflecting back to the task, please go into detail discussing what we did during the lesson as well as your thoughts towards the video’s we watched.

    1. Thank you for your comment Miss Norman, these processes have made me realise what ways I find the easiest and most natural ways to choreograph. I realised from these tasks that I find it easier to choreograph from visual prompts and also having set rules the I can create movements from. These tasks have lead me to think my own choreographic process, I feel that this will be a lot of research on the thing that I'm choreographing from. This research will include the movement of this stimulus and also the dynamics so that my movements can be as accurate as possible.
In the lesson we watched a video of rain that we then had to use as inspiration come up with movements from. The video showed raindrops on a window, I realised how the raindrops started of with a slow dynamic and then as more rain drops merged into the original the speed at which it ran down the window increased. By observing these dynamics I found it a lot easier to choreograph compared to the zodiac task of choreographing from words.
