Week 5 – Stimuli
This week we looked at various stimuli for our choreography. First of all there was a girl in a line holding a gun. We then created a list of annotations and things that inspired us from the picture. For this picture I mentioned dictatorship, as everyone looked controlled and also commented on the use of lines. In the foreground everyone’s in lines but towards the background it’s more chaotic. Therefore, to mirror this you could use movements only in lines towards the front and then towards the movements that are further back are less controlled.
The second stimuli that took my interest was the DNA. This lead me to think about semi conservative replication. This is the process in which DNA replicates, during this process one strand remains the same but the other changes to compliment this. Subsequently, during a motif half could remain the same but the other half can be changed each time to compliment the previous movements. In addition, you could use fragmentation in the choreography to show how something so big can be made of such small things.
Finally, the stimulus that I was most drawn to was the picture of pollution. In this picture there are many different levels which can be used in my choreography. Also I was inspired by what caused the smoke. This is fossil fuels and then I thought about what fossil fuels are - small creatures from the prehistoric period. Due to all of these points I think that I could potentially do a piece on the journey of the fossil fuels as I could use small movements and then eventually have the movements represent smoke and the consequences of smoke and pollution.

If the stimuli were danced as solos how would you choreograph the work, as you have discussed them as group pieces?
ReplyDeleteThank you for your comment Eliza, I would maintain the same idea of lines but make the movement more geometrical.
DeleteThese are some great ideas! You have really developed and searched deeper into the meanings of each stimuli. Do you have any thoughts on which choreographic devices would suit each one? Also what would be the emotions you would want to portray to the audience for the Pollution stimulus?
ReplyDeleteThank you for your comment Louisa, for the DNA stimulus I feel like fragmentation would really follow with the thought of small things being broken down from something larger. Also for the pollution stimulus I would show the emotion of panic whilst showing the consequences of climate change.
DeleteDid the use of group discussion have an impact on your thoughts? What other ideas and interpretations were discussed during the lesson? Reflecting back, what drew you away from the other options and towards the 'Pollution' stimuli?
ReplyDeleteThank you for your comment Miss Norman, the group discussion opened up so many different interpretations that I had not thought of myself. One interpretation for the picture of the girl with the gun was the idea of concentration camps which lead to think more about the feeling of restriction and evil. This really made me think more deeply about the photo and how I would portray these things choreographically, I thought about how you could use restricted movements to incorporate the feeling of being detained. Another interpretation for the DNA stimulus was the idea of degenerative diseases. After hearing this view I thought about how illnesses, such as dementia , affect so many people in today's society and how it would be very movie got do a piece based on this. Fragmentation could be used for this to represent the losing of memory slowly until it's no longer there.
ReplyDeleteFinally after hearing everyone's interpretations and reflecting on my own too I was drawn to the "pollution" stimulus. What drew me to this picture in particular was how relevant it is at this moment in time. With all the climate strikes and the prevalence of Greta Thunberg, it's clear that climate change is a massive priority for our generation. By doing my choreography based upon the causes and consequences of fossil fuels and climate change I hope to bring a sense of urgency to the audience.
