Week 8 – Creative Development – Session 2

I have now completed my choreography, I have faced a few challenges whilst creating my piece such as finding it difficult to get inspired and create movements. During the first creative session I found it difficult to use movements that mirror the fluidity of marine organisms, however after reflecting on my creative process I realised that I needed to write ideas down and view videos of marine life online, and use their actions as literal parts of my piece.

Due to the fact that the beginning of my piece is linked to marine life I researched the activity of deep sea organisms by watching documentaries (Earth, 2018)and trying emulate that in my movements. I also was inspired by my practitioners creative process as I used the word "fish" to create a motif. Wayne McGregor uses the letters of words to inspire him, for example the letter F could be 3D in front of him and he has to get around it or he spells it put literally with his body. I used this same technique as a means of extending my creativity and adding to the piece. This motif can be viewed above.

The second part of my piece is based upon pressure, I came to the realisation that I needed more information about pressure so I could fully portray the force in my piece. I discovered that there's a sense of resistance within pressure and so I included this dynamic within this section of my piece. I again used McGregor's creative process of spelling out the word pressure to create movement. During the motif I get closer and closer to the floor until I cannot get any closer.

As I started creating the heat and smoke sections of my choreography I found that my researched really inspired me to use different dynamics, as the particles move in such contrasting ways. However, when watching a video of smoke to analyse it's movement, I realised that a lot of it is similar with subtle differenced. Therefore I decided to incorporate embellishment as a creative device to mirror this unique aspect of smoke. Moreover, I decided to include repetition of movements throughout my piece to symbolise how this all occurred from marine organisms.

The final section of my choreography is about the consequences of fossil fuels on the Earth, I found this the most difficult part to choreograph due to the fact that it's less scientifically based. To overcome this I had to adapt my creative process to rather than writing things down and then dancing it, to dance it first to see how the movement feels as my aim is to create a sense of chaos and also a sense of cause and consequence. This then brings me to another choreographic device I have used, question and answer as I feel this will help me portray through my movement that everything that we do has consequences. I also then found myself having to research more about the consequences and how they manifest, for example with a tsumani is typically caused by large, undersea earthquakes at tectonic plate boundaries. When the ocean floor at a plate boundary rises or falls suddenly, it displaces the water above it and launches the rolling waves that will become a tsunami.(Nationalgeographic.com, n.d.) Therefore, I could then build my movement from this.

  1. I liked the fluidity of your movement in this video. How will you develop this feeling throughout your piece?

    1. Thank you for your comment Ella, I will develop this feeling throughout the piece by using embellishment and also repetition. Even if the stage is not necessarily as a "fluid" section but the repeated movements will hint to the dynamic.

  2. This is an excellent start! The structure of your post is well thought out and clearly describes your creative work in relation to the stimulus and research as well as your chosen practitioner. In relation to the criteria, I would say that this post currently sits around the 2:1 mark. For further development, discuss how your current creative process may differ to the process you used at the start of your development. It is great you have used further research to overcome your challenges. Can you please reference any videos you used to inspire your creative movement in this section? It would also be great to see a video of choreography you have created in relation to your stimulus and research. Additionally, discuss your movement in relation to your research further. Are there any examples of where your use of research behind your stimulus has added depth to your piece? What sort of movement has this lead you to incorporate within your piece?

  3. Thank you for your comment Miss Norman. The research in which I have undertaken has helped me to understand the dynamics which will need to be used in each stage, not just the movement. An example of this is the smoke section. After researching the movement of particles in a gas, I knew that my movements had to grand and travel lots but to keep in mind the sense of release. This is because a in a gas the particles move freely but when looking as smoke there's a fluidity and calmness about the movement. Therefore, this has lead me to add in movements such as chaines and turn leaps from the corner to show the freedom of the particle but also the energy of the particle, which is shown in the movement of my feet and the fact that I'm jumping. This section of my dance can now be viewed above in the blog and also I have referenced the video from which I have drawn inspiration from.

  4. This is a very strong blog Niamh well done! I love how you have really used and explained how your researched helped you throughout this task, it was also interesting to read how you faced challenges however were able to overcome them. What would you say your strengths and weaknesses have been throughout this task? If you had this opportunity again, would you do anything different?

    1. Thank you for your comment Lucy, throughout this task I would say my strengths have been being able to come up with a narrative for piece that I am passionate about, also planning out the stages I wanted to include and the choreographic devices for each. However, my weaknesses have been learning my choreography, I find it easier to choreograph through words on paper but find it difficult to then learn my piece from this. Normally I will have someone to dictate the words to me, however this was not possible so I needed to find a way of overcoming this, therefore I did a: look, cover, dance, check method. I would read what I had choreographed and then put my notes down, dance what I had just read and then check to see whether this was correct.
If I had the opportunity to do this again, I think that I'd be more specific with movements in my plan rather than just a general feeling of what I wanted to include.

  5. I like the way you have interpreted the stimulus and have created a whole background story which entirely relates to the picture. You mentioned that in your final section there is movement based on the choreigraphic device question and answer. I wondered if there was a question in your head while you were chorographing? And did it have an answer?

    1. Thank you for your comment Nathan, an example of a question I had thought of was: I wonder how long we have left until out Earth is in a critical condition? My answer to this was that we shouldn't be focussing on how long we can leave things as they are and that we need to do something about this now before it really is too late.

  6. I really enjoyed reading your blog and watching your choreography video which really benefits this blog altogether.
You have mentioned above about using the choreographic device of mirroring, is there any other choreographic devices that you will include in your piece?

    1. Thank you for your comment Hannah, I will also include devices such as augmentation, retrograde and embellishment.
